BBD's Eighth Annual Week of Service Focused on Giving Back Locally

BBD’s eighth annual Week of Service took place Friday, June 10 through Friday, June 17.

Week_of_Service_NonprofitsOur annual Week of Service was created in 2009 as an opportunity for all staff in our firm to give back. Each year, all firm members are invited to spend a week volunteering at the expense of the firm. This year, our service focused on work with several not-for-profit clients and friends in the Greater Philadelphia community.

Traditionally, our Week of Service efforts were centered on Habitat for Humanity-style projects in Appalachia, specifically in Kentucky. Eight years ago, inspired by the ABC News 20/20 special, “A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains,” Mike Boyle, BBD’s managing partner, committed to the extended service trip to this region.

Although these many past service experiences were valuable and memorable for all involved, we re-focused our efforts this year in our own neighborhoods because of both the great needs in this area and the inspirational projects that our not-for-profit clients are leading. We value our relationships with our clients and the greater not-for-profit community, and we would like to be of help to these organizations beyond the services we provide traditionally.

We completed diverse volunteer opportunities throughout the week, kicking-off with a food drive and a diaper collection on Friday, June 10 and continuing through the following Friday, June 17. Beginning on Sunday, June 12, BBD firm members travelled to not-for-profit organizations throughout the city and suburbs to volunteer onsite.

Our service opportunities included participating in a run benefitting people with disabilities; assisting an education-focused not-for-profit to prepare summer school materials; assembling furniture, including playground equipment, for an early learning center; cleaning and gardening a historic site; beautifying a homeless shelter with fresh paint and yardwork; and making fleece blankets for children.

We are honored to be a small part of helping these not-for-profit organizations. Below is a list of the organizations we worked with to complete these volunteer activities. We thank them for their assistance in scheduling this Week of Service and for their work in the Greater Philadelphia area.
